More than one in four households in Britain are using some form of domestic help.

This survey was held using more than 2,000 people and found that 28 % currently employ help with their housekeeping such as using a cleaner, nanny, or gardener for help.

While this trend is more common in households with children, singletons are also using domestic help, this is so that they have more time to socialise and take care of their careers

On average, these people are paying around £45.75 a month to their domestic helpers, although these clients are not necessarily wealthy, with 40 % having a total household income of £28,000 or less.

Funded by Interserve, they provide some other facilities within the Hospital. The Virtual Nurse will regularly prompt visitors to use the many hand gels on offer.

Should the trial of this new Virtual Nurse work, they will be considering using more virtual tools around other areas.

This idea came from the British Olympic Association when news headlines informed us of GB’s Chief Medical Officer Ian McCurdie, advised athletes to avoid shaking hands with other competitors in the Summer’s games to prevent illness. It then later arose that the British Olympic Association would be issuing competitors with portable sanitisers to help keep their hands germ and bacteria free.

However it is thought that it isn’t just the athletes in danger of this, as everyday suppliers, clients and other colleagues use handshakes as a main form of contact, therefore office workers are as much at risk of illness and germ spread as the participants in the Olympics.

The work carried out by HaCIRIC, the worlds largest research programme into healthcare infrastructure located at the University.

The HaCIRIC research finds that:

• Handgrip handles on hospital doors become more frequently contaminated with microbes than ‘push’doors where there are no handles.

• Many hospitals are required for security reasons to have entry pass controlled doors which get touched by all staff, cleaners and visitors. Contamination of this operation can act as a source for microbial spread. The NHS could consider designing alternatives such as foot pedals, for example, which are used in some countries to open doors.

• Some surfaces such as rims of sinks can be missed by regular cleaning – microbiological swabbing has demonstrated that these are sometimes heavily contaminated. Researchers have observed these contaminated surfaces being touched, or used to support other objects such as papers, notes, files and medical equipment, often because there may be nowhere else to put them. Such contamination may then be carried off around the hospital.

• Many more wash hand basins have been installed in recent years.That’s good if they are used, but the research shows that this depends on whether sinks can actually be seen. If visibility is obscured, either because of the design of the ward or because of curtains pulled around a patient’s bed, hand washing declines.

Professor Gray from The University of Reading said: “These findings are contributing to an increasingly sophisticated and evidence-based approach to understanding the environmental aspects of cross contamination and infection in hospitals, which we hope will save many lives and reduce the costs to the NHS.”
